Just so you know, I am a huge, HUGE scardey-cat when it comes to horror novels. And by the book's cover, it seemed like a scary read. But it is not that at all; and after I found out what the book is actually about, I felt pretty mad that I had not picked this book up sooner.
SUMMARY
This book is told from the P.O.V from Jacob Portman. Ever since he was a young child, his grandfather has told Jacob stories about his childhood. Growing up, his grandfather was an orphan during World War II. He lived in an orphanage with many other young children, all under the care of Miss Alma Peregrine. But there is more to these children then meets the eye. All of them are peculiar, which means they possess super-natural abilities. (such as controlling fire, invisibility, super-strength, etc.) Of course, Jacob believed in these tales until he grew older; then reality sunk in. Its not until his grandfather's passing that these stories come to the surface once again. To honor his Grandfather's memory, Jake decides to travel to the orphanage to meet his grandfather's childhood friends. But once he does, he discovers that there was much more to his grandfather's stories then he let on.
REVIEW
I am giving this novel five out of five stars. I absolutely loved this book! The whole book was completely original; I thought all of the children's abilities were unique and extremely creative. The book's originality makes it stand out from other YA novels in the best way. I loved all of the characters, they were all a blast to read about and full of surprises. The setting is definitely one of my favorite elements in the novel. The peculiar children isn't only what makes the orphanage unique; there is also the use of a time loop; created by Miss peregrine herself. I loved learning about this unique world, and I loved the history Riggs tied in with the time loop.
CONCLUSION
If you have been hesitant to read this book because it appears frightening, go pick it up right now! There are some black and white pictures in the book, but they work well to help the reader visualize the characters and the places mentioned in this book. So don't wait any longer if you haven't read Miss Peregrine's Home for peculiar children!
